Collen Bros (Quarries) Ltd was contracted to carry out the Asphalt surfacing on the Craigavon Greenway project in 2014.

Part of the work required on this project was for 6mm blue SMA. Due to not having completed this type of work with coloured asphalt before and no manufacturer in Ireland having ever manufactured blue SMA, Collen Bros (Quarries) Ltd embarked on a series of tests to ensure the blue SMA was a success for the project.

Many different binders, dyes and various aggregates were tested to ensure a light blue colour was achieved, this was required to help enlighten the dark underpasses in which it was to be placed and reduce antisocial behaviour.
